Cobalt Cape
Overview
A deep blue cape awarded to players of Mojang's discontinued card game Scrolls. Very few players obtained this cape before Scrolls was shut down.
The Cobalt Cape is a deep, saturated blue cloak tied to Scrolls, the digital collectible card and board game that Mojang produced alongside Minecraft. Players who owned Scrolls and linked it to their Mojang account were granted the cape in Minecraft as a cross-promotion between the two titles. Because Scrolls was a niche product that never reached Minecraft's audience size, and because it was eventually shut down, the pool of eligible players stayed tiny. That makes the Cobalt one of the genuinely scarce official capes: most players have never seen it in the wild, and its blue tone is distinctive enough that collectors recognise it instantly.
How to Get the Cobalt Cape
Given to Scrolls (Caller's Bane) players who linked their Mojang account. Scrolls was a card game developed by Mojang.
The Cobalt Cape is no longer obtainable. The window to earn it has closed, and Mojang does not sell or re-issue it. Buying or selling accounts to acquire it breaks Minecraft's usage rules. Players who already own it can keep using it.
History & Rarity
Scrolls launched out of beta in 2014 after a well-publicised trademark dispute with Bethesda over the word 'Scrolls.' It was later renamed Caller's Bane when Mojang open-sourced and wound it down, with online services ending in 2018. The Cobalt Cape comes from the period when Scrolls was a live, account-linked Mojang product, so it captures a specific, short-lived chapter of Mojang's history beyond Minecraft. Once Scrolls' servers and account linking ceased, the path to earning the cape disappeared, freezing its already-small holder count.
In rarity terms the Cobalt Cape is classed as Very Rare. It became visible in the Java cape system around version 1.7, and it is currently no longer obtainable.
How to Equip the Cobalt Cape
The Cobalt Cape is a Java Edition cape granted to accounts that linked a Scrolls purchase. Eligible players select it from the cape carousel on their minecraft.net Java profile.
On Java Edition, capes are managed from your minecraft.net profile, not from inside the game:
- Sign in at minecraft.net with the Microsoft account that owns the cape.
- Open your Minecraft: Java Edition profile page (Profile, then the skins/capes area).
- Find the cape carousel and select Cobalt Cape.
- Save your selection; the cape appears on your character the next time you load the game.

Frequently Asked Questions
What was Scrolls and how did it relate to the Cobalt Cape?
Scrolls was a digital card-and-board game made by Mojang. Owning it and linking it to your Mojang account granted the Cobalt Cape in Minecraft as a cross-game reward.
Why is the Cobalt Cape so rare?
Scrolls had a small player base compared to Minecraft, and it was eventually discontinued (later renamed Caller's Bane). Only the limited number of linked Scrolls owners ever received the cape, so very few accounts hold it.
Can I still earn the Cobalt Cape by buying Scrolls?
No. Scrolls' online services and account linking were shut down, so there is no longer any way to link a purchase and receive the cape.
How do I equip the Cobalt Cape?
If your account was granted it, log in at minecraft.net, open the Java Edition profile, choose the Cobalt Cape in the cape selector, and save.
