Migrator Cape

CommonAdded in v1.17No Longer Available

Overview

A green cape with a Creeper-style pattern, given to millions of players during the Mojang-to-Microsoft account migration. One of the most widely distributed official capes.

The Migrator Cape is a green cloak whose front face carries a stylised Minecraft 'M' mark while the back uses the deep, mossy green most players associate with the Creeper. Mojang handed it out as a thank-you to anyone who moved their legacy Mojang login over to a Microsoft account, so it became the single most common cape in Java Edition. Because tens of millions of accounts made the switch, seeing the Migrator on another player carries almost no bragging rights, but it remains a quiet badge that the wearer played Minecraft before the Microsoft sign-in era. Its understated palette pairs cleanly with almost any skin, which is part of why so many players keep it equipped even though flashier capes exist.

How to Get the Migrator Cape

Awarded to players who migrated their Mojang account to a Microsoft account before the migration deadline.

The Migrator Cape is no longer obtainable. The window to earn it has closed, and Mojang does not sell or re-issue it. Buying or selling accounts to acquire it breaks Minecraft's usage rules. Players who already own it can keep using it.

History & Rarity

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Mojang in 2014, but the forced move from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts only ramped up around 2020-2022. To soften the change and reward early movers, Mojang attached the Migrator Cape to the migration flow; the cape became visible in-game around the 1.17 era. The original deadline framing meant players were encouraged to migrate quickly, and the cape was the carrot. Mojang later required migration for everyone to keep playing, which is why a large share of the active player base owns it. It is no longer something you can newly earn, because Mojang accounts no longer exist to migrate from.

In rarity terms the Migrator Cape is classed as Common. It became visible in the Java cape system around version 1.17, and it is currently no longer obtainable.

How to Equip the Migrator Cape

The Migrator is a Java Edition cape tied to your Microsoft account, so it appears in the cape carousel on your minecraft.net profile rather than in any in-game shop. If you migrated in time it is already on the account and simply needs to be selected.

On Java Edition, capes are managed from your minecraft.net profile, not from inside the game:

  1. Sign in at minecraft.net with the Microsoft account that owns the cape.
  2. Open your Minecraft: Java Edition profile page (Profile, then the skins/capes area).
  3. Find the cape carousel and select Migrator Cape.
  4. Save your selection; the cape appears on your character the next time you load the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still get the Migrator Cape in 2024 or later?

No. The cape was tied to the act of migrating a legacy Mojang account to a Microsoft account during the migration window. Since Mojang accounts have been fully retired, there is no longer anything to migrate, so the cape can no longer be newly earned.

Why is the Migrator Cape so common?

Almost every returning Java player had to migrate their account to keep playing, and the cape was granted as part of that process. Because the migration applied to the entire legacy player base, tens of millions of accounts received it, making it the most widely held official cape.

Does the Migrator Cape work in Bedrock Edition?

No. The Migrator is a Java Edition cape granted to a Microsoft account for Java. Bedrock Edition uses its own dressing-room cape system and does not display Java migration capes.

How do I equip the Migrator Cape?

Sign in at minecraft.net with the Microsoft account that completed migration, open the Minecraft: Java Edition profile page, find the cape selector, choose Migrator, and save. It then shows on your character in-game.
