Founder's Cape

RareAdded in v1.0No Longer Available

Overview

One of the earliest capes in the game. Recognizes the original supporters who bought Minecraft during its alpha and beta development phases.

The Founder's Cape honours the players who bought Minecraft while it was still in active alpha and beta development, before version 1.0 ever shipped. It is a recognition badge for the people whose early purchases helped fund the game when Mojang was a tiny studio. Because the eligibility window closed the day Minecraft 1.0 launched, no purchase after that date can ever qualify, which gives the cape a fixed, finite holder base that only shrinks as old accounts go dormant. For many veterans it is the cape they are proudest of, since it cannot be bought, won, or migrated for; it can only be held by someone who was genuinely there in the pre-release years.

How to Get the Founder's Cape

Given to players who purchased Minecraft Java Edition before its official release (1.0) on November 18, 2011.

The Founder's Cape is no longer obtainable. The window to earn it has closed, and Mojang does not sell or re-issue it. Buying or selling accounts to acquire it breaks Minecraft's usage rules. Players who already own it can keep using it.

History & Rarity

Minecraft spent years in paid alpha (from 2009) and beta (from late 2010) before the official 1.0 release at MineCon on November 18, 2011. Players who paid in during that development era are the 'founders.' The cape ties directly to that pre-1.0 purchase date, making November 18, 2011 the hard cut-off. This is what separates it from later mass-distribution capes: its population was effectively frozen over a decade ago, so every Founder's Cape you see today belongs to a genuinely early supporter of the game.

In rarity terms the Founder's Cape is classed as Rare. It became visible in the Java cape system around version 1.0, and it is currently no longer obtainable.

How to Equip the Founder's Cape

The Founder's Cape is a Java Edition cape attached to the long-standing account that bought the game before 1.0. It appears in the cape selector on the minecraft.net Java profile for eligible accounts.

On Java Edition, capes are managed from your minecraft.net profile, not from inside the game:

  1. Sign in at minecraft.net with the Microsoft account that owns the cape.
  2. Open your Minecraft: Java Edition profile page (Profile, then the skins/capes area).
  3. Find the cape carousel and select Founder's Cape.
  4. Save your selection; the cape appears on your character the next time you load the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact cut-off date for the Founder's Cape?

Eligibility ended on November 18, 2011, the day Minecraft Java Edition 1.0 officially released at MineCon. Only accounts that purchased the game before that date during alpha or beta qualify.

Can I buy a Founder's Cape or an account that has one?

Mojang does not sell it, and buying or selling Minecraft accounts violates the usage terms and risks the account being banned. There is no legitimate way to newly obtain the cape today.

Is the Founder's Cape the same as the MineCon 2011 cape?

No. They are separate. The Founder's Cape rewards a pre-release purchase, while the MineCon 2011 cape was given only to people who physically attended the 2011 convention in Las Vegas.

How do I equip the Founder's Cape?

Sign in to minecraft.net with the qualifying early account, open the Java Edition profile page, select the Founder's Cape from the cape carousel, and save.
